Our History

It all started with one tour on one cruise ship...

...and it grew into a full service bike store with sales, rentals, repairs, accessories PLUS two tours on most every cruise ship that comes to Juneau. Cycle Alaska provides Juneau and its Southeast communities, as well as visitors, with everything they need to get out and enjoy riding a bike.

Cycle Alaska is owned by John and PeggyAnn McConnochie who purchased the small tour company back in April of 2005.  They methodically added their retail and repair center, then the rental center in response to the community's wish for a vibrant home town bike shop. The rest is history...

Meet the Cycle Alaska Team

John P. McConnochie, Owner

Position at Cycle Alaska: I am the co-owner of Cycle Alaska with my wife, Peggy Ann. I love being involved in such a positive business, whether it’s seeing the smile on the face of a customer getting on a bike for the first time in many years and remembering what a sense of freedom their first bike meant to them or seeing the wide-eyed wonder of one of our guests on tour as we show them the beauty of Juneau.

Hometown: I was born and raised in Dunedin, New Zealand

Favorite place to ride: For mountain biking, it would be a tough choice between Perseverance Trail and Treadwell Trail. When I want to be on my road bike, North Douglas Highway with a trip up to Eaglecrest or “out the road” from mile 28 to mile 42 and return would be where you will find me.

Favorite bike: My Kona Hei Hei Trail DL for the trails and my Trek Madone 5.2 on the road. I also love riding my Kona Rove NRB DL, a multi-surface and multi-purpose bike.

What are your hobbies off the bike? I enjoy reading (history mainly), running the trails in Juneau, and exploring the alpine trails when the weather permits. I also enjoy traveling and experiencing different cultures, crossword puzzles, spending time with my wife Peggy Ann and family, giving back to Juneau and paying my “civic rent."

If you could have one superpower what would it be: To fly.

Is there anything else you would like to say: Juneau is an amazing place to ride and I like sharing that experience with Juneauites and those who visit our beautiful city. I also enjoy introducing people to the bicycling lifestyle.
