Meet the Cycle Alaska Team
John P. McConnochie
Position at Cycle Alaska: I am the co-owner of Cycle Alaska with my wife Peggy Ann. I enjoy being involved in such a positive business whether it’s seeing the smile on the face of a customer getting on a bike for the first time in many years and remembering what a sense of freedom their first bike meant to them or seeing the wide-eyed wonder of one of our guests on tour as we show them the beauty that is Juneau.
Hometown: I was born and raised in Dunedin, New Zealand
Favorite place to ride: For mountain biking it would be a tough choice between Perseverance Trail and Treadwell Trail. Regarding road riding, North Douglas Highway with a trip up to Eaglecrest or “out the road” from mile 28 to mile 42 and return.
Favorite bike: My Kona Hei Hei Trail DL for the trails and on the road my Trek Madone 5.2. I am looking forward to riding my new Kona Rove NRB DL, a multi surface and multi-purpose bike, when it arrives in the spring.
What are your hobbies off the bike: I enjoy reading (history mainly), running the trails in Juneau and when the weather permits, exploring the alpine trails, traveling and experiencing different cultures, crossword puzzles, spending time with my wife Peggy Ann and family, giving back to Juneau and paying my “civic rent”.
If you could have one superpower what would it be: To fly.Is there anything else you would like to say: Juneau is an amazing place to ride and I like sharing that experience with Juneauites and those who visit our beautiful city. I also enjoy introducing people to the bicycling lifestyle.
Position at Cycle Alaska: Service Center Manager
Hometown: Albion, NY
Favorite place to ride: Any of the MTB trails around Juneau are plenty of fun really. They all have something to offer. Compared to where I'm used to mountain biking (GA, FL, SC) the terrain here is very rad and technical which I enjoy.
Favorite bike: Remedy 9.8, Playful, Capable, light and a great value. Does everything you need and then some. Trek crams A LOT into the price point of the 9.8.
What are your hobbies off the bike: Really enjoyed my first season of snowboarding this winter. Beside that, I recently got into Disc Golf, hiking and Sim Racing (iRacing). I dabble in a lot of other things as well.
If you could have one superpower what would it be: Tough... probably the ability to peacefully resolve any conflict.
What surprised you most about Juneau? That it's actually even more beautiful than the pictures.
Is there anything else you would like to say: I've been wrenching on bikes for nearly 9 years now. I hope my abilities can meet the expectations of Juneau.
Position at Cycle Alaska: Operations Manager
Hometown: Indianapolis, IN, and then Ogden, UT
Favorite place to ride: Single track outside of Hurricane UT on a little piece of paradise up on a mesa.
Favorite bike: Surly Karate Monkey Hardtail 29er. Steel is real!
What are your hobbies off the bike: I think about Bikepacking and Touring when I am off the bike. That is all I can really think about.
If you could have one superpower what would it be: Adding two extra hours on to each one of my days!
Is there anything else you would like to say: The community of Juneau has been so nice and welcoming to me and my wife. Thanks for hosting us!
Position at Cycle Alaska: Shop Mechanic
Hometown: Lincoln, NE. and Palisades CO.
Favorite place to ride: Western Colorado and any road that gets me to work. Daily Bike Commuter through and through!
Favorite bike: Kona Rove. It is a simple, durable, steel framed bike that doesn't seem to carry any of the weight of a typical steel frame.
What are your hobbies off the bike: Barbequing and cooking.
If you could have one superpower what would it be: Breathing underwater. I would love to have that and paddle the Mendenhall river.
What surprised you most about Juneau? Seeing people who I met back in 1990, watching them raise their kids here, watching those same kids leave and come back to do good in the community. I love watching the community grow.
Moose "Shop Dog"
Position at Cycle Alaska: Shop Dog
Hometown: Ogden, UT
Favorite place to ride: Anywhere with good smells, good dirt, and good friends.
Favorite bike: I am not bi-pedal, so I cannot ride!
What are your hobbies off the bike: Oh, I sure do love looking for and eating Erik's lunch without him knowing.
If you could have one superpower what would it be: Thumbs!
Is there anything else you would like to say: I have been around the deserts and mountains of the intermountain west for most of my dog life, but the smells here in Juneau are some of the best I have ever smelled! Come by and say Hi!
